Theme : Tintin

Billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles! ... Ten thousand thundering typhoons!... Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Thompson and Thomson..... A mention of any of these character names, one immediately associates it with the comic series called The Adventures of Tintin.

As a young reader, I was introduced to these series (along with Asterix) by my childhood friend, Anirudh, who had a good collection of these comics. Reading these comic series always made me laugh and in 2001, when I was diagnosed and treated for Malaria (which almost took my life if not for a timely treatment) these helped me while away the time in the hospital and also recuperating too.

When I first started Postcrossing in 2015, I was part of an exhibition in May 2016 and met many Postcrossers with whom one made some good friends. Som, one of the guys whom I met, is a fantastic and an avid stamp collector. He once showed a portion of his vast collection, and in that I saw a couple of Tintin stamps. Like the Asterix set, I was taken to it. As I was doing a bit of some search on these stamps, saw that there are several more of these released by very few countries.

As luck would have had it, Som had the one below for sale and I immediately grabbed it. As they say, a journey of thousands stamps begins with the first stamp, I guess this started the collection of another new theme - Tintin.

Early 2017,  WOPA - World Online Philatelic Agency, an online site which has collaborated with several countries to help collectors (like me) to purchase postage stamps and other collectibles from various countries from one single site through a single currency, had come out with an unique offer. For £28.00 (approx), they were having a few Tintin stamps for sale. This site was recommended to me by Som, again. Finally after much deliberation, I finally decided to plunge and go for it.

What arrived a couple of weeks later, blew my mind as I never thought such beautiful stamps existed! I was glad that I made the right decision then. These stamps are mostly from Belgium.

I then started looking for more of these Tintin related stamps and one day, I happened to have a swap with a wonderful Belgian lady. The swap was for Belgian Europa 2017 stamp with that of a Poona Horse stamp (from India, of course). As usual, by a force of habit, I enclosed a small letter to her mentioning my philatelic interests, that included Tintin. A few weeks later I was surprised to her letter to me with a few of the older Europa Belgian stamps and along with that was these 2 beautiful stamps. I was delighted as I never expected someone to actually read my letter carefully and send something back to me!

At the end, I'm pretty pleased as a punch that my Tintin thematic collection is slowly growing and I hope to exhibit at least one frame of these stamps soon.

Theme : Star Wars

Star Wars, an American film series that started in the year 1977, is one of the most famous film series in the world. There are several fans across the world the fan base of this movie is growing pretty large. I used to watch these movies in awe and I still do. Honestly speak I prefer the original trilogy (Ep. IV, V, VI) compared to the second trilogy or the prequel (Ep I, II, III). With Ep. VII released in 2015, Royal Mail released a set of stamps based on the characters that appear in the new film series. That caught my attention and I being a Star Wars fan (not a huge one, although I may look huge!) and I bought the set. This is perhaps my first set of Star Wars stamps and this is now another of my favourite themes to collect!!

1. Great Britain (2015)
This set was released in 2015 as a part of the lineup of the new release Episode VII - The Force Awakens. The stamp set features all the main characters that feature in the new movie and also some of the favourite characters such as Dart Vader, Yoda, and The Emperor

2. Spain (2017)
This block is issued by Correos (Spain), released this fabulous stamp set printed with Lenticular technology, providing a greater depth of the image. the design consists of the characters from the film series : Stormtroopers (The Imperial Soldiers), Chewbacca, R2-D2, Yoda, C-3PO and and villian of the saga - Darth VBader (my favourite character).

As this is a Lenicular stamp, the scan image of the above is not that perfect. Sorry about that!

I do know that USA, Portugal, France, and UK (again in 2017)  have released stamps on this theme. Looking at these stamps to enrich my thematic collection - Star Wars!!

Theme : Asterix

Asterix, Obelix.... these are the two famous icons from the cartoon series called Asterix. The adventures of the two Gauls were written by RenĂ© Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo, and has kept the world at splits for decades.

As a young reader, I was introduced to these series (along with Tintin) by my childhood friend, Anirudh, who had a good collection of these comics. Reading these books always made me laugh and in 2001, when I was diagnosed and treated for Malaria, these helped me while away the time in the hospital and also recuperating too.

When I first started Postcrossing in 2015, one of the first few cards that I received had one of these stamps affixed. I was immediately attracted towards it and a google search revealed that there are indeed a few stamps on both Asterix and Tintin series. A few days later I received this entire minisheet on an envelope!! I was super thrilled to receive this set on an envelope, but I guess I wanted more of it and thanks to my friend, Som, he had this one available with him and he sold it to me!

The below stamps from Germany are fabulous and they focus on the three main characters - Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix.

After posting this blog, I did a little bit of digging as I came across this cute MS of Asterix being sold on ebay for less than €1.00 (was 0.99c actually, thought it was a steal!) and decided to buy this one as I realised that I need to slowly build up my collection now.

I do know for a certain that France, Guernsey, Belgium have also issued stamps on Asterix. Looking to either buy them or swap them for anything. So if you do happen to see them or have them, let me know and I shall be willing to buy or swap.
